Not long after I arrived in Darwin, the city received one of its more unusual military visitors, the USS Pogy, a nuclear submarine.
At the time it was standard policy from the US Navy to “neither confirm nor deny” they carried nuclear weapons when entering Australian ports.
The USS Pogy was however was a different kettle of fish, as this vessel was actually powered by a nuclear engine. Oddly enough before visiting the Pogy I had already heard of the submarine as it was mentioned in the Tom Clancy book “The Hunt for Red October” (1984), where it along with the Dallas accompanied the Red October into port.
