Haven't noticed this traffic signal box before, but I do emphasize with the spirit.

As a boy from the country studying at UQ, I remember going to see Fleetwood Mac at Festival Hall in 1977.

These days it is more apartment building than entertainment complex but it's memories live on.

Hard to believe summer is almost over. The days are still warm but evenings are beginning to cool off. Forecast today is an almost perfect 18-29C.

Looking at the calendar there is only 18 days until Easter Monday so by my calculations, less than three weeks of a Queensland summer left.

Soon it will be out of the shorts and the cotton short sleeved shirts, and back in the jeans, long sleeved shirts and jumpers for another year.

When we downsized and moved into an apartment I was sure I was going to miss my barbecue.

Fortunately as a Christmas present we ended up with one that is smaller, but with the flat cover that slides away and the fold down glass side shelves, fits neatly away on our balcony.

Walking home today and detouring through QUT's Gardens Point campus I snapped this shot of Old Government House.

The green lawn in the foreground and the pop of red in the persons coat was just a happy coincidence.

  • Story Bridge lifeline

My walks take my up and over the Story bridge at least once a week and so pass a couple of brightly coloured phone booths, one at each end of the bridge.

I know it has long been a contentious issue and there have been calls for high transparent barriers to be placed on the bridge edges.

I hate to think of the bridge being used as a tool for suicide but the stats would suggest it will happen from time to time. Perhaps these signs and easy access to counselling might help.

  • Regatta Hotel

I stopped for lunch and a drink at the Regatta Hotel today, on the way back from Queensland university so it was just like the old days!

The hotel is probably most well known as the place where Rosalie Bognor and Merle Thornton (Sigrid's mum), chained themselves to the bar to protest the men' only restrictions the licensing laws of the day had for public bars.

As a student I remember sitting on the corner during the Joh era street marches, and rowing in the college eight to two-hour Sunday sessions – 11am to 1pm and 4pm to 6pm only.

Years later I remember being in there with TV presenters with make-up and tissues in their collars, and colleagues who had a habit of drinking , singing, dancing, and waving items of apparel in the air. And that's just the activities I feel comfortable writing about.

Today I saw one person chatted for wearing a cap in the main bar and another asked to sit on the verandah as he had a tank top on.

Times have changed, but it is one of the few pubs in Brisbane that really took advantage of the river and this remains the same.

  • Goat Pies at the Powerhouse Farmers Market

I was interested in trying the Goat Pies at the Powerhouse Farmers Market today but unfortunately the goat pie guy was very busy and it was difficult to get near the tasting table.

I had to settle for a Cornish pastie for breakfast and some great lettuce and herbs to take home from my shopping trip.

  • Fungal wonders

More fungal wonders in the lawn outside work.

I suspect that these aren't the sort you want to eat.

  • Kerbside bar in Constance Street

    Kerbside bar in Constance Street

I always seem to be posting about bars on this community, but finding new and interesting ones is something I like to do – particularly if it serves dark beer.

My latest discovery is Kerbside in Constance street, Fortitude Valley. apparently it has been there a couple of years but I discovered it more by accident when walking towards Ann street and a bus.

I'd describe the decor as op shop warehouse with clusters of chairs and couches arranged as you might find them on a show room floor.  Each cluster has its own name according to the type of furniture it holds. I was sitting at the Formica kitchen table 🙂

On the day I was there it was serving some very nice beers from Bacchus Brewing off the tap – including a very nice double chocolate stout. Most of the small crowd that day was there drinking cocktails so it should have something for most tastes.

  • Early drinks

Took the city route on my walk yesterday morning and turned into Queen Street at 6am only to find one of the bars packed to overflowing.

As you might guess from some of the clothes it was the +Manchester United v +Real Madrid C.F. UEFA cup rematch on TV in a 24 hours a day bar. Don't know I've ever seen it that full though – especially at 6 in the morning
